Yeah, eso sucedió cuando tenia sobre cinco años, también. Mi hermano Tiff y yo estábamos troceando madera. Y yo iba a recoger los pedazos de madera, pilló mi mano por medio, cogí otro pedazo y boom!. Fue un accidente. Mi hermano se sentía fatal por ello.
Estábamos en las montañas por ese tiempo, y mi padre condujo hasta Santa Cruz, quizá sobre 30 millas, mientras mi madre me sujetaba la mano envuelta en una toalla. No recuerdo que me doliera ni nada. Es solo una especie de sensación de zumbido. No tengo asociado ningún dolor con ello. Para mi la parte traumática de esto fue después que el doctor lo amputó, y tenia los puntos y vendajes en el. Y poco a poco se hizo mas pequeña hasta tener solo una pequeña venda. Y pensé que mi dedo continuaba debajo. Y esa fue la peor parte, cuando desapareció toda la venda. " Oh, Dios mio, me dedo se ha ido". Pero después de esto, todo estaba bien, porque como niño si tienes algunas cosas que te hacen diferente, es una buena prueba. Así que tengo un buen kilometraje de tener un dedo menos cuando era un niño.

Escuché un disco hace años y no le presté mucha anteción. Buen momento para empezar con esta banda pero viendo todo lo que estais colgando acojona un poco. Ya estoy bajando el primero y un par de directos (el del lago Tahoa y el del 71 homónimo de la calavera y las rosas). Poco a poco, conforme vaya catando ya iré pidiendo orientación.

Lo lógico sería el de Grateful Dead Movie, su peli-concierto del 74. Le han pasado por encima los años irremisiblemente, pero la selección musical es de primera. están tambien los "View From The Vault", tres volumenes con conciertos de finales de los 80 (con todo lo que significa eso: grandes estadios, sintetizadores, Bob Weir con ajustados shorts, y Jerry García bastante vacilante con la voz), está tambien el concierto en las piramides de Egipto en el 78, pero aún no lo he catado, y me gustaría destacar el DVD "Festival Express", que narra la gira en tren por Canada con los Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band, Delanney & Bonnie, Buddy Guy, Flying Burrito...en la que Jerry y cia tienen un papel muy protagonista. Impagable la jam de jerry y Bob con Janis y Rick Danko:

Si alguien se va a comprar el "Festival Express" que este al tanto porque existe una edición en doble DVD con 92 minutos más de directos, entrevistas y desvarios varios.

Este DVD es una de las mejores experiecnias que puede tener uin ser humano desde el sofá de su casa.

A conexion galega dos Grateful dead:

descendiente de gallegos, sus raices se remontan al siglo XIX en Sada(turkilandia). Jerry Garcia, bautizado Jerome John Garcia, era hijo de Jose (Joe) Garcia, reputado saxofonista de Jazz, hijo a su vez de Manuel Garcia, que habia emigrado a San Francisco poco despues del terremoto de 1906
se cuenta que el nombre de la banda se lo inspiro una historia sobre un caminante que se encuentra con el fantasma de un muerto que no habia recibido sepultura. la santa compaña?

La canción autobiográfica de los Dead, narra la vida del grupo en la carretera ( se pasaban unos 6 meses al año girando) incluida una detención por posesión de drogas en Nueva Orleans. Uno de los buques insignia de su repertorio, y de las pocas canciones que apareció en todas sus giras durante sus 30 años de existencia. Curiosamente (o no tanto) tiene gran parecido a otro tema autobiografico por excelencia: The Ballad of John and Yoko:

Originalmente un tema folk con bonitos cambios en su melodía y preciosa letra, acabó por convertirse en un himno con el que cerraron muchisimos de sus conciertos a lo largo de los años, y lo fueron evolucionando hasta el punto de englobar todo un set de música entre sus 2 partes (Sugar Magnolia y Sunshine Daydream), como sucede en el Closing Of Winterland del 78...se convirtieron en autenticos maestros en este tipo de trucos sobre el escenario, cualquier cosa podía pasar en uno de sus conciertos...

Tras la marcha de Mickey Hart (debido al desfalco que les hizo su padre y manager del grupo, aunque volvió 3 años mas tarde) la banda perdió el envolvente sonido que le confería la doble percusión, lo que les hizo volver a un sonido mas rockero y directo y con un Pigpen cada vez mas volcado hacia el blues (quizá consecuencia de su autodestructivo modo de vida), el 71 seguramente sea su mejor temporada en cuanto a directos. Ademas la explosión como compositor de Bob Weir, cada vez mas asentado como colider, unida al eterno momento dulce de García hizo que siguieran facturando grandes canciones como churros, lo que les llevó a decidir que nadie mas que ellos debía regir su destino, así que aprovechando que les faltaba un último disco para cumplir su contrato con Warner se apresuraron a recopilar material de algunos conciertos y entregaron a la compañía su segundo homónimo (el popular skull & roses que Phil Lesh quiso titular Fuck You...) para pasar a autoeditarse en su propio sello Grateful Dead Productions...

Es la canción que abre el American Beauty, la que te sumerge de primeras en ese maravilloso disco con esa melodía entre doliente y melancolica, con la particularidad de que no está cantada por ninguno de sus 2 vocalistas habituales y está tocada por mayoría de miembros de los New Riders of The Purple Sage, que ejercen de banda de apoyo durante prácticamente todo el album.

Una de mis favoritas de los Dead...
