Our lead singer, bass playing madman, Eddie Spaghetti, has been diagnosed with stage 3 oropharynx cancer and will undergo surgery and radiation treatments this summer.

All good vibes, juju and well wishes accepted.

Creo que nivel 1 es cuando es muy inicial y nivel 4 cuando se ha expandido.

On the afternoon of Monday, June 15, after five long days of holding our breath, the phone finally rang, from a number we have all too soon memorized. “Eddie,” he said “you have stage 3 oropharynx cancer and you should come in for surgery as soon as possible.” I was driving the car, heading to Portland, OR with the whole family and even though we knew the call was coming, I had to pull over. I couldn’t breath, he was scrambling for paper and a pen and I just felt my arms get weak. I saw his face become tense and scared. This was the news we waited impatiently for, it was the call that would change everything.

Like E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G.

It is so hard to write this not only because of what is happening, but to whom it is happening to. I’m talking about my husband of nearly 16 years, who is a son, brother, nephew, uncle, friend and amazing father to our three kids Quattro, Elvis and Zeke (ages 14, 5, 3). I am talking about a man who chose his career path the minute he first heard The Knack play “My Sharona”. The guy who started a band, the Supersuckers, with his best friends and has played stages, big and small, around the world for the last 30 years. A man who has been doing just that thing that made him so happy as a kid. A man who is more important, influential, and crucial than he will ever know, to so many of us.

To say I’m crushed is the understatement of the century. To say we have had a tough year is the only truth I know.

Eddie Spaghetti of the Supersuckers, is now facing surgery to remove the cancer that was found in a neck mass during a biopsy in NYC. After a persistent, what we believed to be allergy related, swollen lymph node in his neck turned up squamous cell carcinoma while our family was traveling across the country on a year long journey, we were forced to seek an immediate Pet-scan in LA (where the band was meeting to start a tour). Knowing you have cancer cells in a neck mass is one thing, hearing that they need to scan your whole body to find out where it originated was too much for this guy.

Learning about the process shut him down for awhile. Unable to hold many conversations with me in those days we had to wait for the scan and then the 5 to wait for results. I was scared for him but I just kept asking “how are you doing?” everyday. Every 30 minutes probably. I was annoying. Seeing someone actually afraid of dying (or worse, his words, “not being able to sing…”), well, if it weren’t for our three kids, I’m just not sure how either of us would have survived. Keeping the news quiet and strictly with the closest of family (band included) was just an added bonus to the intense pressure that was building.

It is true what they say, that it takes a village. We would be in a dark, dark place without “our village” but thankfully, we are not. My best friend has cancer and there’s absolutely nothing I can do about it. There’s no amount of money that would rid him of this horrible disease so many suffer from. There is no one I can call to make things better but the support that we already have felt from everyone knocks us off our feet.

After Eddie recovers from surgery (scheduled for Monday June 29 in Los Angeles) with his family by his side at our friends guest house, he will undergo radiation- everyday for at least 6 weeks. They are hopeful there will be no chemo but until the results come back, we will not know. In that time of his surgery recovery, I will be looking for an apartment and employment (writing, social media, personal assistant) in the LA area.

On June 18, Eddie plays his last show with his band for awhile, making it bittersweet as he will be one step closer to getting this shit over with but he will have to put on hold the very thing he has always done; put his guitar strap across his shoulder, walk up to the mic and play his heart out. There will be no income after the last show before Eddie's surgery while The Supersuckers have had to cancel their summer European tour and plans to release the next Supersuckers album are in jeopardy.

Bueno, pues parece que todo ha salido bien... Esperaremos más noticias.

Well last week was a roller coaster that has exhausted the family on a new level.

Eddie’s surgery schedule hit a snag and to tell you the truth, we aren’t exactly sure why. Insurance, money... he was being squeezed in as it were, as his surgeons are both scheduled for vacations mid July, so I guess his slot just got lost. We had some amazing help navigating the ins and outs and I am so grateful for that.

What I do know is that he has to now go in for another biopsy on Thursday morning. This doesn’t make it look great for his surgery getting done before they vacation. Eddie is upset by this but he does understand that it is out of our hands. So much is out of our hands, we are really learning to go with the flow and do what we can with what we have and even though part of that is cancer, it just so happens to be a lot of love and support. Because through it all, we know he has a very good chance of recovery and getting his life back on track, although it may not be when we originally thought, the outpouring of love is… well, it keeps us going sometimes when things get super tough.

From what we have heard, now that his treatment location has been secured at City of Hope and doctors have advised us, he will have to wait 8 weeks after surgery to have radiation. When the pathology results come back from the surgery, we will have a better idea. The plan at this point, is to then start radiation for an unknown length of time but usually it is about 6 weeks. They believe he will NOT need chemotherapy but we were told they can’t say for certain (I mean honestly, at this point we know to take everything with a grain of salt- two surgeries canceled…).

So what does this mean? It means a lot really. Eddie and the band will be off of work possibly longer than we were originally told, his recovery from surgery will be much gnarlier than we thought and we will be in California until at least Christmastime. All in all, there are a lot of bad things, the other guys in the band being heavy on his heart as he hates to see them be put on hold, but we are choosing to highlight the good. There will be more time to write songs, enjoy the sun and spend time together. But what this also means is Eddie will be out of work for much longer than we projected and I would like to thank you all for supporting us.

Speaking of supporting us, you have no idea the chills we got when we heard we reached our original goal. Not knowing what to set the initial number at, Eddie’s amazing team has had the honor of sharing the news and we are beside ourselves. But this is not over, not even close. Medical bills alone have been more than $10,000 out of our pocket and we haven’t even started! On top of moving to LA and establishing residency. We would like to ask that you keep sharing our story, keep rooting for Eddie and know that all of it is going to a very good man. He is a good seed, he is an amazing musician and he is not done. Maybe he is just getting started?

Bueno, por lo que veo, hay noticias buenas y noticias malas. Las buenas es que parece que, si lo operan de una puta vez, cojones ya, puede que no necesite quimio. Las malas es que....... no lo operan todavía (¿¿??) y ya los gastos van por los 10000 dolares, y encima tienen que estar viviendo en california, en un apartamento, y que no tienen buche para poder costear todos esos gastos, encima sin Eddie trabajando.....

Sin un buen seguro médico estás jodido, muy jodido.
Y con uno normalito también, porque los copagos son bestiales.

Cuando yo estuve por allí a un compañero le dio un jamacuco tras correr una media maratón. Un buen susto. Le llevaron a un hospital donde enseguida pusieron en marcha la máquina de hacer dinero. Le hicieron mil pruebas por si tenía daños en el corazón, dos días ingresado... bastante exagerado todo. La broma le salió a la empresa por unos 6.000 euros, a pesar de que teníamos un seguro decente.

Más novedades. Mañana le operan.

So tomorrow is the big day. The first of two surgeries and I wanted to tell everyone that we are so grateful for the love we have all received. It has left me speechless lately but today, being the last day before we learn what our new normal looks like, I have found my strong, emotional, shaky voice.

We have had a pretty shitty year but even after everything, we are fully aware that we are still very lucky people. We have a monstrous support system from close family, to complete strangers and those we thought were no longer in our lives. It's humbling really. But why is being humbled the universal equivalent of a bitch slap?

This whole experience is a part of life I had hoped I'd never be a part of... the daily struggle to feel like the bottom isn't going to just fall out. Being optimistic is usually my strong suit but even I have had days where I felt like our family just wouldn't be able to stay above water. The words of encouragement have been the horizon for us.

Eddie Spaghetti has been sick one time in the 16 years we have been together (you read that right, this September it will be 16 years). I have never seen him in the hospital. I have never seen him unable to get up, hold a guitar, play with his kids or chess on his phone and tomorrow will start this stupid fucking journey that will take all of those things away from him. There is no where to hide, he will not be rescheduled. The time is now and it just fucking sucks.

But he will come back to us. He will get up one day and take Quattro to the skatepark and ride his longboard down the street. He will stand outside and walk around strumming his guitar in the evening while I'm making dinner and toss Baby Zeke in the air and listen to Elvis talk for hours. But my friends, it will take a while. He will not want to be around anyone while he is feeling low and that will make him feel lower, I fear. Everyone that knows him knows that he has always been social, he has so many friends and it doesn't stop with the names in his phone. He will miss being on the stage every night, playing his songs to his newest group of friends. Something he rarely tires of and never (really) complains about. He has said (and now I'm going to cry) that he is like and shark if he ever stopped swimming (playing music), he would die. Well we won't let that happen.

I want to ask that everyone share the words of my husband. I want to ask that you share the music of the band that means the world to him- don't let this time be Supersuckers free. I want to make this time about the music, about the band that he truly loves more than anything. He lives it, he breathes it- he never ever stops believing in it. I'd like him to come back stronger than ever and back onto the stage, feeling as though not a day has passed. I want all of this for him because I am more than his wife- I am his best friend and his biggest fan.

Bueno, pues ya está operado. Mucha suerte, colega.

Eddie has left the building... and entered a new one. He now resides on the patient floor of City of Hope.
He was rolled up to the room, that I was finally camped out in, and said "Ow. I have been hit by a truck."
He looked fantastic.
So here's the surgery update.
In the end, everything went very well. He was in the surgery for longer than expected because of a few complications but he is completely fine. I promise.
His neck muscles were so huge, the surgeon said, she had to cut an extra hole to lift them up. I told her he carries around a very big bass- and we both laughed for like 5 minutes. So that took a lot of extra time and work on her part. She also cleaned out the lymph nodes in the neck level 5 (toward the back). His cancer was in level 2 (under jaw) but she dug around and was sure to get it all- that's probably where the "hit by a truck" part comes in.
Then she said that she was putting in his drainage tube (gross) and it poked a hole in a vein. She said the spot doesn't usually have a big vein like that but we both assume since he is such a badass- that's just how it do for him. Anyway, she had to cut a couple extra holes and dig around and find the vein and clip it off to stop the bleeding. She then watched him and went and checked pathology to make sure the margins were good (meaning no more cancer in the tissue removed) and when she was happy, she sewed him up. And OMG did she sew him up. It is too gnarly for pictures today but hey- tomorrow is a new day.
We love you guys. Today fucking sucked. And my phone blew up so much I had to charge it twice. It was almost never annoying. We raised a bit of dough today too, so do me a big fat favor and bring me a cold beer, or just share this page so I don't have to turn tricks.
