Birdy "Young Heart" (2021) "Portraits" (2023)

Me sorprendió que esta cantautora inglesa, que a pesar de su juventud ya lleva algunos discos publicados,  no dispusiera de topic propio.

Ahora, con ocasión de la publicación de un nuevo trabajo, llega el momento adecuado,

Defendiendo en solitario el mismo tema, con gran solvencia....

Bueno, bueno........he encontrado esta interpretación del mismo tema en un programa de TV.......me ha encantado............y no puedo evitar registrarla aquí, la musicalidad del tema y su intrepretación me parece fascinante....

Previo a este temazo Loneliness, hubo un primer adelanto, esta maravillosa Surrender, que pondría sin dudarlo al nivel de las homónimas de Ballard  y Springsteen.....

No tuvo hace un tiempo una canción que pegó por aquí bastante por sonar en una serie?

Lo investigaré porque lo desconozco.....

Admito que mi conocimiento de esta artista es reciente, se limita por el momento a este disco, todavía no he indagado en el pasado...

Es momento de actualizar el hilo, puesto que han ido apareciendo más videos oficiales del  disco, un tanto naif para mi gusto, pero que sirven para enmarcar los temas...

Seguro que como mínimo en vuestra vida, una relación se os ha ido al traste temporal o definitivamente, por culpa de una habladuría o un rumor falso que llegó a los oidos de vuestra pareja....de eso va el tema...

No conozco todavía los anteriores, pero con este me pasa algo curioso.......al escucharlo del tirón se me hace muy largo y en ocasiones hasta monótono............pero escuchando los temas aisladamente me gustan mucho más....

Joder, 129 millones de visualizaciones en YouTube............ frente al millón que obtienen sus videos actualmente.....

El tema me suena haberlo escuchado en su momento, sin saber quien lo interpretaba. La impresión que me da es que aconsejaron a Birdy convertirse en cantante más poppy, y este video es la muestra, cuando a ella lo que le va es la introspección, la  melancolía, la timidez.......que es a lo que ha vuelto en el último disco.....

La canción que da titulo a su disco actual, una prueba más de esa vuelta a la pausa, a tiempos más lentos que decía Cuervo, aquí hasta me suena hasta soul blanco
............y vuelta también al low-cost y el homemade en los videos.....

Ritmo más pausado.......pero el encanto sigue por las nubes....

Decía bien en el post inicial del hilo que no conocía absolutamente nada del background de esta joven cantautora, pero, dado que su álbum actual me había llamado la atención, abría hilo para irlo dedicando a esos nuevos temas, siguiendo más o menos el ritmo de publicación de nuevos videos oficiales.

Sin embargo, primero Daeshu y después Fantasma de Cuervo desvelaron algún apunte del pasado de Birdy, y mi sorpresa al rescatar el tema Wings fue que ya había escuchado de sobras ese tema en el pasado, sin saber quien era su creadora.

Ahora, gracias a la parrilla de YouTube, descubro otro de esos temas que escuché como anónimos........y era cantado por una Birdy quinceañera en su debut, un álbum de covers.....

175 millones de reproducciones  

Es que Birdy lo petó a lo gigante. Sobre todo al versionar a Bon Iver:

Encontré este video alternativo del tema de Bon Iver....

Al final del video, aparece el anuncio de su primer álbum.......y es de hace 10 años.

Quiere decir que lanzó el primero....¡a los 14 o 15 años!

Pues su notoriedad, medida en visualizaciones en youtube, parece haber ido a la baja..

Retomando el último álbum, tras Loleliness, Surreder, Second Hand News y Young Heart, el quinto video oficial publicado ha sido The Otherside



El disco me está ganando mucho, sobretodo si no lo hago de tirón, sino tema a tema....

Difícil ponerse al día debido al ritmo de publicación de los videos oficiales, ahora llega el sexto con Little Blue.... cambiando su tradicional piano por la guitarra......

Y repitiendo la misma sensación....todos los temas del disco ganan al ser escuchados en solitario, y no es porque no exista homogeneidad musical entre ellos, que la hay, sino que el tono general melancólico intimista puede inducir cierta sensación letárgica en caso de audición continuada...

Descubro que la gira europea ha sido recientemente aplazada hasta 2023....

Del disco de 2021 se me había pasado colgar el video de la deliciosa Voyager, precisamente el tema que está interpretando en segundo lugar en esta gira europea que pasa por Madrid el lunes y Barna el martes...

Madrid cae rendida ante la magia de Birdy

Muy recientemente ha salido un adelanto de su próximo trabajo, el tema se llama Raincatchers....me recuerda a algún tema antiguo de Florence + The Machine....y con ese tema ha abierto sus conciertos de la actual gira europea....



Birdy shared in the live chat for the premiere of the Raincatchers music video that the song is about “losing your inner child and finding her again”

Its director, Max McLachlan, also mentioned that Birdy “wanted a music video that would shed the dainty image of her as a naive child, but address the years of youth lost having to play grown-up in the industry”

Es imposible resistirse a la versión acústica de este tema, y de cualquiera de Birdy.....

El segundo sencillo de adelanto, Heartbreaker, sorprende con un video "con historia", poco habitual de su parte, y musicalmente sigue fielmente el cambio que supuso su antecesor, con respecto al acústico y bucólico Young Heart...

Los ecos de Florence + The Machine se hacen presente desde las primeras notas....



Como casi siempre, las mejores interpretaciones sobre el mensaje del tema se encuentran en los comentarios en youtube...

Parece que con el anterior video Birdy se pulió todo el exiguo presupuesto y no ha tenido más remedio que hacer un video low cost para el tercer adelanto del álbum, llamado Paradise Calling....

Toda la austeridad del video contrasta con la gran exuberancia del tema, un trallazo electro pop como no se ha escuchado este año...

Si la versión electro-pop es un bombazo, la versión stripped no le anda a la zaga en cuanto a encanto.....

A la fecha, para mi una de las dos canciones del año....

Ranging from movie-worthy numbers (“Not About Angels”), delicate vocalisations (“Deep End”), exuberant covers (“Skinny Love”) and emotion-driven contemplations (“Keeping Your Head Up”), Birdy’s decade in the industry has explored all the corners of introspective, delicate musicianship. Her latest delve into sonic stylings comes in the form of the eleven track record Portraits.

Album opener “Paradise Calling” reintroduces us to the world of Birdy. Opening with incredibly high-energy electronic notes, the track is a delightful taster of the rest of the record as Birdy declares “All I ever wanted was something to believe.” The sophomore track, “Raincatchers,” unveils itself with a striking orchestral movement that perfectly introduces Birdy’s lush vocals. This cut sees the artist move away from the usual atmosphere of melancholy to deliver a more upbeat, energetic number that delves into alt-pop sounds and offers up a narrative filled with poetic lyrics. Swaying in the same sonic vein as Kate Bush – overriding pop tones dominate the track with a swirling, colourful soundscape.

Where “Raincatchers” offers up joyful instrumentals, “Your Arms” juxtaposes with delicate piano notes and soothing vocals from the leading lady. This track harks back to earlier releases and wouldn’t find itself amiss amongst the beauty and delicacy of Fire Within.

Following on, “Heartbreakers” offers up the same heartache felt veined throughout the previous track, but with the addition of echoing, vocalisations, and soaring synth-laden elements. More poppy and preppy “Heartbreakers” is an exuberant ode to letting go (“If someone’s gonna let go / It’s me that’s gotta let go), and as the title suggests, coming to terms with the end of a relationship and the heartbreak that ensues (“Heartbreaker / It was over right from the start”). Here is where Birdy’s artistry and knack for narratives shines through, as, despite the conflict between the lyrics and musical substance of the cut, the track still makes sonic sense with glimmering slivers of optimism.

“I Wish I Was a Shooting Star” takes its place as the most ballad-esque number on the record. Almost acapella, barely audible electronics swirl, percussive beats slowly introduce themselves as Birdy prays for an escape (“I’m dying to get out of here / I wish I was a shooting star”). This track is seemingly where the album takes a u-turn and reverts back to Birdy’s older sounds, steering away from the upbeat melodies the album initially introduced.

Sister tracks “Ruins I” and “Ruins II” are best experienced when played sequentially, rather than being wrapped around the middle section of the record. Soothing with hints of experimentalism, the cuts sit in the same vein as a handful of Lorde numbers as Birdy delves deeper into the world of soft pop.

Closing the record is “Tears Don’t Fall” that rounds of this album’s swirling journey with thrumming percussion, almost-hidden piano keys and Birdy’s crooning vocals. Simply her most confident and exploratory project to date, Portraits is an exemplary display of Birdy’s prowess as both a musician, and a songwriter. Her move away from covers to original stylings was a bold and impressive move from Birdy, and it’s more than paid off.
