Although tragedy is part of the Blind Melon story (original singer Shannon Hoon died in 1995), the band has accomplished several feats. Formed in Los Angeles, Blind Melon is known for the insanely popular music video for “No Rain” (it has more than 21 million views on YouTube), a show-stealing performance at Woodstock ’94 and the initially overlooked sophomore album, Soup, that later became a cult classic.

Since 2006, Blind Melon has carried on with another frontman, Travis Warren, and is creating new music. “We did some writing out here at Joshua Tree and another session in Los Angeles. We’ve cut seven songs so far,” said original member and guitarist Christopher Thorn. “We’re all pumped. It just feels good to write songs again. It’s been too long.”

The group, which also consists of two other original members—Rogers Stevens (guitar) and Glen Graham (drums)—and newcomer Nathan Towne (bass) is also gearing up for a spring tour.

Nearly 10 years after interviewing Thorn for my book about Blind Melon, A Devil on One Shoulder and an Angel on the Other, he spoke with me about the past and present before the band performs at (Le) Poisson Rouge in NYC on May 2.

Do the new songs sound like any specific era of Blind Melon?
That’s always a hard thing and I think that’s for other people to figure out and label. Every band says this, but I feel like we’re writing our best songs. I really feel like we’re on to something now and we’re writing great stuff that reminds me of the Soup record, which is my favorite stuff.

Soup was not appreciated when it was first released in 1995, but has developed a cult following.
It’s crazy. Twenty years later, I feel finally validated. We felt like it was such a great record when it originally came out. For it to be slammed so hard, a record we were so proud of, was confusing to us. It was like, “What? I thought we did a good job.” I get that it was dark and it was different than the first record, but in the end, it really grew on people. And more importantly, it has a great shelf life because people are not over it. I’m really flattered that people still care about that record.

Looking back at the day of the filming of the “No Rain” video, did you have any idea it was going to be special?
Not really. By then, we had done so many videos, and it was a period where we were so busy; we would tour, tour, tour. We’d be someplace in the middle of the country, then we’d have two days off, fly back to LA, shoot a video, fly back to the tour. There was so much of that going on that the making of that video just went by and it was another day in our lives. But, it was a special day in the sense that it felt good to be outside…we were outside in this beautiful field…But I didn’t know it was special until I saw the first cut. I remember when we saw the first cut, going, “Oh shit, that really does feel special.” It felt better than all the other videos. The message felt so clear and it was a really beautiful, universal message: everybody wants to be loved and accepted.

I was really hit hard by the death of Chris Cornell last year. The last time I was that affected by the passing of a rock singer was Shannon. Although I didn’t personally know Chris or Shannon, I felt like I did through their lyrics and music.
Chris’ passing really gutted me. It hit me really hard and fucked me up for quite some time. It brought back the same feelings that you’re talking about with Shannon. We did know Chris and we toured a lot with him and he was so kind to us. He was incredible to us because that was the first tour we ever did [in the fall of 1991], and we didn’t know what we were doing at all. Soundgarden showed us the ropes. And they really were enamored by Shannon, because Shannon reminded them of Andy Wood [singer of the Pearl Jam precursor band, Mother Love Bone] so much. I’m still really crushed about the whole Chris thing. When you don’t have an answer, it’s really painful.

I’m looking forward to the upcoming Danny Clinch documentary of Shannon’s home movies.
I just hung out with Danny last week and he was saying they’ve been carving on it and carving on it. I know at one point, it was like a five-hour cut, and they had to get it down to a proper hour-and-a-half cut. But it’s all really good stuff. I’ve seen some clips and it’s going to be great. It’s the most powerful footage you will see of Shannon, because it doesn’t get any more intimate than somebody filming their life.

How would you compare Travis to Shannon?
I try not to. Travis has been in the band now for over 10 years, so he feels like he’s the band. And he has so much respect for Shannon. When we’re working on the old songs, he’s always very conscious of getting them right. He wants them right more than anybody because he was a fan of the band. But Travis has a wicked ass voice; his voice is on fire. He can really sing anything. It’s unbelievable.

Is original bassist Brad Smith still in the band?
Brad is doing Brad for now, that is all I can say about that. We’re kind of working that out right now and he seems to be busy doing other projects. We’re really excited about writing and he didn’t have the time. We just have been writing without him at this point.

What can fans expect at the upcoming NYC show?
We played in Denver and another place in Colorado in October and we started pulling out some deeper cuts of songs we hadn’t played in 15 years. We’re all excited because we’re playing a different set now. We’re playing some songs now that we didn’t even get to play with Shannon…some songs off the Nico record that we never played live. We’re reinvigorated and it feels fun to play some of those older songs we haven’t touched in a long time. And there will be some new songs, as well. We’re going to be releasing a single before we go out on this tour.

Nueva entrevista con Christopher Thorn

Speaking to Kyle Meredith With… (via Consequence Of Sound) recently, guitarist Christopher Thorn opened up about the tenth anniversary of reunion album For All My Friends, and discussed the upcoming record the group are working on.

“We’re musicians and we go forward and we make records, and that’s what we do,” he began. “And it’s up to other people to judge us whether or not we should be making them or not, you know what I mean?”

“But in the end, you know, this is what we do, so we are still gonna do it even if we suck and fail at it, we’re still gonna do it. But I have to say, and I know every band says this, I feel like we’re writing the best songs of our career right now.”

“Even though it’s late in our career, I actually do feel that, and I just…this weekend, I’ve been mixing the new single or the new song, I could say…the new song for the next Blind Melon record. We’ve been writing a bunch, and we have a song and a video done, so we just mixed the new song last night actually.”

While that definitely sounds pretty intriguing, Christopher Thorn admitted that there really isn’t sort of definite date as to when fans might finally get to hear the new record.

“You know what, the timeline, we’ve kinda figured out. I mean, we cut in December, the guys all came out to Los Angeles. I have a recording studio here in Silver Lake and they came out and we cut seven or eight songs? I think we cut eight songs, so we’re deep into it, and you know, it’s like the drums and bass and things like that are done on about eight songs, so we’re just kind of finishing them up.”

“So timeline-wise, no, I don’t have a timeline but I wish I did. I mean I’m dying to do it, I mean this is all I do. I’ve been excited to write, you know, for the next Blind Melon record and everybody’s been writing stuff and it’s been really great and fun.”

While no release date has been finalised, it definitely feels good knowing there’s new music from the group on the way. Who knows, we might even get an Aussie tour out of it as well!

Good morning my motherfookers. I'd like to take a moment and tell all my friends and loved ones how much my life has changed with my spirituality with God, changing my diet to a Paleo Diet, quit eating all sugars, sodas, juices, only water, workout every day, quit smoking cigs, quit drugs/alcohol and basically gave up all my bad habits and replaced them with good, positive, healthy habits. Tara has made the switch as well and we are doing better then we ever have been. The cherry on top was adding Wheatgrass to my diet every morning as well as adding Chlorophyll to a glass of water, both in the morning and and in the evening.
Folks, I'm not telling you guys this to pump my ego up or get a bunch of likes on my page. I'm telling you this because I'm living proof, a walking testimony just by changing my diet, adding a workout regiment during the week and staying positive-(by putting positive thoughts into my head. eliminating negativity).
Before January of this year, I got back on heroin and meth. It was a two year nightmare. I was constantly depressed, full of anxiety, constantly living in fear and Never had energy- hence the reason I was doing drugs. On top of the street drugs I was doing, I was also on "doctor meds". I had been taking Prilosec for about 10 years, just about every day. I was on Cymbalta for "depression", as well as Suboxone(for getting off of heroin).
Folks, I know some of you aren't going to want to hear this but I must tell my story. Those fucking "doctor" drugs I was on, was Far Worse to my health then the damn street drugs(heroin and meth) . That shit is absolute poison. The damage Prilosec did to my gut alone was unbelievable! I believe Western Medicine and the overall health care system in America is out to slowly kill us, while raking in Serious dough at our expense. Slow roasted genocide. What these little demons don't tell you is folks, our bodies are Incredibly strong. We can heal our bodies just by eating the right foods, consistent workouts and overall positive thinking.
We Don't Need Western medicine. It's a myth told to us to make us think we need them to "heal". This is false. God didn't leave us hanging people. We've been blindly lied too, particularly in the last 125 years. Most food in the grocery stores is pure poison. Processed foods are poison. Sodas and sugar in general is poison. Breads these days are full of sugars. Eliminate these foods, start working out and folks, just like me, you will be off All drugs here soon as well as feel better then you've ever felt. I'm living proof of this. I hate to say this because it's so damn cliche but friends, if I can do it, literally anybody can do it.
Like many of you, I was lost. I thought my life and destiny was to constantly live in fear and spend the rest of my life addicted to drugs to mask my pain and fear. I was Completely wrong. As of today, I've lost tons of weight, have more energy then I did at the age of 17(I'm Not kidding) and I'm completely drug free(doctor drugs included). As a matter of fact, unless I get in a serious injury, I will never go to a doctor again, at least Not in America. They're out to kill you, whether they know it or not.
The medical field has been infiltrated by pharmaceutical companies and now the more meds they hand out, the more kick backs these fuckers get. Just like Washington, it's all about money, promotions, power, ego and blackmail. Folks, you have the power to heal yourselves. Change your damn diet, drink nothing but water(filtered), at least in the first few months to cleanse your system, throw some workouts in your day as well as Wheatgrass(that's key) into your diet and you yourselves will start to heal, just like I did. This is the Only Way to "beat the system". Then once demand is in for a healthier lifestyle, supply will soon follow as these people always follow the money. Money is their God. Let's use that to our advantage;-)
I Love each and every one of you and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. Please don't take this message wrong or take it as a "holier then thou" type message because it isn't.
Believe me, I have my issues and things to work out(learning patience is one) before I can become the man I'm supposed to be. I'm far from where I need to be.
I have no ulterior motives or hidden agendas. I'm Not selling you shit. I just want to this country/planet to start healing.
I Love you all- T-dub
