Marah: Life Is A Problem
Another one that fell through the cracks, recorded in Nashville, Tennessee at 16 Ton Studios as part of the first sessions that led to the forthcoming MARAH album "Life is a Problem".
I played a borrowed "high string" guitar and one of my brother's rusty old harmonicas i found in a road case. "Waiting for a Devil" is fashioned after some "old time religion" songs that I've grown to really love (Washington Phillips, The Anglin Brothers, Blind Willie & Kate McTell). I sang this song with Christine and she played the Fender Rhodes electric piano. Johnny Pisano played the upright bass and later played electric response lines through a plate reverb. Martin played his drum kit through an old tube amp (but don't blame Marty, i made him do it).
We've "sound checked" this song a lot more times then we've ever really performed it .... whenever we did perform it however, people really seemed to respond to its old fashioned simplicity and sincerity (huh). We've found that halfway through some seriously "wordy" Rock n Roll gigs, this one can be a "quiet storm" that hits pretty hard. It's a great pleasure to officially/unofficially release it here.
This is a simple Folk/Gospel song written at a time when I was attempting to say as little as possible as a means of capturing more. It's about idle time, ever-shifting allegiance. It's about undying faith under severely tested patience. It's about trying to believe in invisible stuff.
We are making these "unreleased" recordings available to you because you deserve 'em. As music fans you've displayed the rare quality of really giving a shit about our music through the years and that means a lot to us.
Noise Trade is kindly offering you a 40 second sample here (which is sadly about 30 seconds longer then the average Americans attention span) but what we'd really love to see is you guys download the song and listen to it on your i-Pods while walking alone on a snowy, evening street. Perhaps more songs deserve such a shake down.
This song is free if you pass it along to 5 music loving friends...beyond that you are
free to make a donation to our continued efforts to bring cool music to cool people. We could really use your friendship now. So thank you very much if you do contribute.
Please spread the word, sign our mailing list, our mailing list. Much album news and tour dates comin' round the mountain.
Yours Truly,
MARAH

Re: Marah: Life Is A Problem
A ver qué tal.

"Incident in Madrid (The Story of Christmas)" DAVE BIELANKO 24/12/2009
Disclaimer: the following story is not to be confused with any sort of public statement or apology from MARAH (N/A). It's just good old fashioned message board fodder. Feliz Navidad!
When Christine and I walked on stage in Madrid last Sunday night we were ready to spill our guts out for the crowd. We were in pretty bad shape yes, but we were ready to reach down and find something honest and brutal and exciting for the audience...backstage we slammed a couple Red Bulls (we hadn't slept in several days) and said "nos vamos." It was Spain, it was Christmas, two of our favorite things in the whole world.
The audience was doing that funny football chant as we walked out into the stage lights. Of all the Rock n Roll fans in the world these were some of our favorites. We would slay. It was meant to be.
Christine steps up to her electric piano that is strangely 500 kilometers in back of me, and I strap on my black guitar. "Ready? Ready." (we are invincible now, an acoustic Motorhead!) I strum...nothing. I strum again....nada. The room spins back in time and goes all sepia tone. Now I am a mime in an old silent film slashing at a soundless lute.....nothing. I am dressed like an Elf spazzing out on a stringless fiddle made of ocean sponge. No sound. The club goes jittery black and white 8mm (Christ, you gotta be joking! We'd arrived at this club 9 hours ago to avoid this. I'd listened to a stylishly dressed Spanish man sound check 87 electric guitar pedals for seven hours playing Tom Petty's "Free Falling" to avoid this. We'd been through 11 countries and caught 2 airplanes that flew at 5am to be here, and now this...) Nothing. Charlie Chaplin.
"Fuck it", just play a song, the sound guy will catch on...he'll feel the crowd, feel our thunder and push up the faders, bringing us all together. Surely he will.
Nope, nothing. The sound man has turned into a laughing Spanish mountain goat (he wears duel bullet belts across his chest and is smoking a rustic cigar). I can't see him, but I feel him back there smirking. He holds a voodoo doll of me wearing a stupid Santa Claus hat...now we start to struggle. Ayudame!
We are trying to play together, old rhythms, muscle memory. We are straining to find each other in a blizzard, but we are drifting apart. What song is this? Who is that singing? Is that Me? I'm standing on a mattress. Are we still on the plane?
Can it get worse? Absolutely! It's charity, anything is possible. Check this out...after fighting our way to the end of our first "song" (the audience cheers!?! Are they still with us?!? Or is the Monitor man making that sound with his mouth?) Our colleagues (fellow sleep deprived L.O.D. soldiers) feel our growing "show business" despair. Invisible, unspoken words are exchanged...they attempt a deep sea rescue (I love the spirit, but...) Willie Nile is now shouting zany, random shit into my mic, there is a strange "white boy" kick drum pattern bubbling up out of the music that I'd never heard before (and hopefully never will again). Our friends are trying to help us, but it's not working. It's a joke. I'm lost in a nightmare, a Jr High School talent show with no pants on and that's not why I came to Madrid. I look at Christine, she is crying on the inside. We gotta go. It sucks bad. "I can't be part of this".... self respect, we gotta walk.
OK, now this is the FIRST time in my entire musical career that this has ever happened to me. (Once, 9 years ago in Annapolis, Maryland, my brother Serge socked me in the eye on stage and I left for 10 minutes or so, but even then I returned to kick out one more jam to wrap up that pathetic performance.) But tonight is different. This tour is over, I ain't goin' back up there....(I'm feeling way too much, tons of things at once...rage, dark comedy, anger, sadness. I'm proud of us and pissed off at us at the same time.) I walk into the dressing room and proceed to kick a large table of drinks into oblivion, and there is an explosion of glass, beer, coca cola light and paella. Tonight, this is my artwork. The still-life of destruction. I inform all interested parties that this will be my last "Light of Day" performance ever (they are afraid, but they force a smile. They know me. We are all friends.) I also tell them that if anyone cares to remove my black guitar from the club tonight they can keep it. To the pub.
I love ya Madrid, but I can't apologize. It sucks, but shit happens. One thing is for sure though...when we return in 2010 to play in your fine city it'll be "Our" gig and we're gonna bring it. We owe you an amazing night and you'll get it real soon. That's a promise.
So hopefully this explanation makes a few of ya smile, laugh or understand us a little bit better. I've played some amazing, inspired gigs in my life and I think I need to keep the bar set a little higher going forward. I can't bullshit the audience, or smile and act like everything is cool when it is not cool. We played an awesome LOD show all over Europe with the exception of Spain (where the local promoter/manager of the "backing band" had a different idea for the evening which changed the format of the show and made us feel like a neglected support band. Surely this wasn't the intention, but that's kinda what ended up happening.) Whatev...it ain't the end of the world. And now that a week has gone by it's actually kinda funny. What's done is done. On we go.
Upon our return to the USA, we are back to finishing an awesome new album and celebrating the holidays with our loved ones. We will NOT be appearing at the New Jersey L.O.D. show in January (if we were in fact ever listed it was a mistake, we'll be outta town mixing, this has been planned for months.) Besides, we've done that show already, more than once...they don't need us no more (If they did would we be there? Fuck Yeah!) But change is good. Bring in some new faces, new sounds. It's time. And besides, the dude from "Live" don't need me in his dressing room rifling through his day-bag, drinking his magic dolphin water.
So have the Merriest Christmas ever and we'll see you real soon. And know that we are extremely proud of the work we did this year with the Light of Day organization (15 shows!? More?). We raised many thousands of bucks and had a great time doin' it. That was the point.
Joe D'Urso singin' the big ending of "New York, New York", Willie Nile bringin' down the house with his new song "One Guitar", Jesse Malin yelling mad shit at airline stewardesses and playin' brilliantly every night...we had an amazing time and we love you all deeply. Thanks for the memories. Seriously.
Peace on Earth,
David Bielanko/MARAH
PS - If this "Incident in Madrid" has created any debt to the Karma Police, you'll be happy to know that Christine and I will not be spending our Christmas morning ripping colored paper off of i-phones and Guitar Heroes, but playing old fashioned Christmas songs to lonely, often family-less old folks in a small town nursing home. That is who we are. That is Christmas. God bless us, everyone.

Re: Marah: Life Is A Problem
A ver...

Hey Rock n Rollers,
Barring any unforeseen disaster, the new MARAH album called "Life is a Problem"
will be released on June 1st, 2010 and we just know you're gonna love it...
Our goal this year is to play all over the globe and have fun bringing cool
Rock n Roll music to cool people. See how nice?
In the meantime we've just released a lilting, country-ass, gospel
B-side/Out-Take from said record and wanted to pass it along to you.
It's called "Waiting for a Devil" and it's available now for free or by donation at
www.noisetrade.com/marah
Here we go again...

Re: Marah: Life Is A Problem
